Why the FRQ input is out of 34
AP Biology has two long free responses worth 9 points each and four short responses worth 4 each: 2 × 9 + 4 × 4 = 34. The 60 MCQs contribute 50%, and the full FRQ total contributes the other 50%. Check the official exam format.
Suppose your six FRQ scores are 6, 5, 3, 3, 2, and 2: enter 21, not 6 correct questions. With 36 correct MCQs, the composite is 36 ÷ 60 × 50 + 21 ÷ 34 × 50 = 60.88. We round to 61%, giving illustrative band 4 under our assumptions.
Use the result with your experimental reasoning feedback
Review the scoring notes for the exact question before awarding yourself a point for a graph, explanation, or experimental control. A partially correct response can earn some rubric points. Record those points individually; a single overall impression such as “mostly correct” is too imprecise for this input.
How to fill in this AP Biology calculator

- Score each long free response out of 9 and each short response out of 4 with the paper's scoring guidelines.
- Add the six scores and enter a total out of 34; do not enter how many whole questions you believe you got right.
- Compare the section contributions, then use the target plan to explore possible gains without treating its score band as an official prediction.
Use College Board's scoring guidance or the rubric supplied with your practice paper. A teacher's feedback on why a point was earned is more useful than guessing a total from how an answer felt.

Using a target score to plan practice
Start with one timed practice attempt. Enter only points you can justify against its rubric, then choose a target of 3, 4, or 5. The target plan shows changes that reach that band under this model. A raw point in one section may contribute more than a point in another, but that does not mean it takes less work to earn.
